Creating a Peaceful Home: A Simple Space Clearing Ritual

There is something deeply comforting about walking into a home that feels peaceful, calm and welcoming.

A harmonious home doesn’t happen by chance – it begins with intention.

Homes quietly absorb the rhythm of our daily lives.  Whether the home is new, old or renovated, the home has quietly been absorbing the energy of those who have either lived there before you, live there now or of people who have built it, renovated it, or visitors who have come and gone.

Whether we have experienced joy, loss, stress or celebrate, many people find comfort in pausing to refresh the atmosphere and clear the energy of their home and begin again.

One of the oldest ways to do this is through the practice of space clearing.  And many like the idea of having a house blessing at the same time.

Using incense as part of a mindful ritual is not about superstition  or fear.  It is about creating a moment of intention – a quiet opportunity to let go of the negative energies the home may have been holding onto previously  or currently.   It is an act of  letting go of what no longer serves us and invite peace, harmony and renewed vitality into our living spaces.  When negative energy exists in a home it will effect everyone living there.

If there has been fighting in a home – it effects everyone, even the paint on the walls absorb it – everything in the home gets absorbed, even the furniture.   Being mindful of introducing secondhand furniture into your home is a must if you do not want the energies of the previous occupants to effect you.   This is why it is recommended that the furniture be restored- perhaps repainted and recovered.   This will bring new life and new energy to the piece.

People often ask me which incense I use.  Over the years I have always used Japanese Ranka Joss Sticks, as they  have a very subtle fragrance, that is simply not noticeable-  making them ideal for people who are sensitive to strong scents.  I  use a beautiful designer room spray for the fragrance – I love the diptyque range of candles and sprays.   I personally do not like the smells of smudge sticks and heavy incense sticks.   Some people like the incense used in the churches as it contributes to that feeling of a spiritual connection which can trigger a sense of  a sacred space during the blessing.

However,  the important part of it is the act of slowing down, becoming present and setting a clear intention for your home that creates the real transformation.

Open a few windows, light your incense and slowly walk through each room, allowing the smoke to flow through whilst gently and quietly saying your intention.

They is no need to rush, follow around as you tap into the energies you may feel- not everyone can feel them, but by simply doing the act, you can make a difference.

Many people choose to clear their homes after and before moving in, and following difficult periods, illness or simply whenever their home feels heavy, lacking vitality or after people have visited.

Sometimes these rituals can have very meaningful shifts in the energies of our spaces.  I personally feel the shift  immediately.

Every home has its own story.
