The Art of Illumination in Interior Design
Good lighting doesn’t steal the spotlight, it enhances the space, making interiors and architecture the true stars. Light has the power to transform an environment, shaping how we perceive a room and influencing its mood and functionality. By thoughtfully designing a lighting plan, you can create a space that feels welcoming, dynamic and visually striking.
When designing lighting for a space, consider the following: How will the room function at different times of the day or night? How much light is needed for various activities? How will the user experience interact with the space?
Our initial impression of a room is shaped by where our eyes are drawn and this can be carefully controlled through lighting placement. A designer strategically chooses what to highlight, using light to guide the viewer’s focus, where the light falls- the eye will follow!
This is why a successful lighting scheme incorporates a range of techniques, each serving a distinct purpose. Example: Decorative lighting, such as a statement chandelier or pendant can serve as a focal point, while task lighting- like a well lit- reading chair, enhances functionality. The key is not just selecting the right fixtures but also considering where the light will fall and how it will reflect within the space to create the greatest impacts.
By blending different lighting elements, you can craft an atmosphere that is both beautiful and functional, ensuring that every space is illuminated with purpose and intention.
